The College Bound Club at The Academy of Math and Science is a voluntary after school club open to 9-12 graders. The club is managed by the University of Arizona's student volunteer service organization, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and has been at AMS since March 2009. A team of university students visit AMS every Friday to teach the students lessons on applying for the FAFSA, finding scholarships, choosing a major etc. (find complete listing of this school year's curriculum below).
Goals:
The CBC's overall goal is to provide students with the tools they need to take a proactive approach to planning their educational and career path. The club also aims to help the students realize their potential and set high yet attainable goals.
Funding & Incentives:
The CBC is funded by grants obtained by the UA SIFE team. The CBC offers regular student attendees of the CBC reimbursements for ACT/SAT testing fees and college application fees. The CBC Team also brings healthy snacks for the students every club meeting.
Results:
For the fall 2009 semester the CBC recorded the following results:
• The amount of students who have a better idea of how they will finance their college education increased by 50% by the end of the semester.
• The amount of students that reported that they now have plans to apply for scholarships increased by 22%, while the increase in the awareness of scholarships went up by 75%.
• At the beginning of the semester none of the students knew how to apply for financial aid, by the end of the semester 30% reported to know how to apply for the FAFSA.
• Students who reported having a clear and concise plan for achieving their goals increased by 67% by the end of the CBC semester.
Special Skill-Building Activities:
Early in this month three CBC students learned valuable knowledge and skills for their futures by leading an initiative to create jewelry to sell as a fundraising activity. The students then volunteered at a fashion/trunk show at the UA where they sold their jewelry and learned about merchandising, personal selling, and college life! Congratulations to Alejandra Ramirez, Katrina Verdzco and Jalissa Heck for raising $142 for the awards dinner, "Honoring Our Dreams" that will be held April 30th for CBC students and their parents.
