03/01/2012 - AMS Most Improved Middle School Student for February

Hannah is a new student at the Academy of Math and Science, beginning in the fall of this year. She is in sixth grade and was named the Most Improved Student of the Month for February. Her favorite subject is math and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Hartley. She enjoys music, likes to sing, and is taking piano at school. One day she wants to be on American Idol. She has three brothers and one sister at home who are older. She has a dog named Rosebud. Hannah says that the best thing about AMS is that “the teachers help you and don’t just leave you to figure it out”. Congratulations, Hannah. We are so proud of you!

Open enrollment period for Academy of Math and Science for the 2012-2013 school year is going to end on March 9, 2012. We strongly encourage you to submit a complete application prior to the March 9th deadline. If, by the application deadline, the number of applications exceeds the capacity of a program, class, grade level, or building, all applications for that program, class, grade level, or building will be selected for the available slots through a lottery.

This spring, the Academy of Math and Science participated in the Math Kangaroo International Mathematics Competition engaging in thought-provoking questions stemming from algebra, geometry, and logic. Five million students from more than forty countries throughout the world participate in this competition annually. 05/06/2011 - Career Fair:  What The Future Holds for AMS Students

On Thursday morning, May 5, 2011, the Academy of Math and Science hosted a Career Fair for their secondary students (grades 6-12). Students were able to spend time talking to representatives from eight universities and colleges located in Arizona, four trade unions and their apprenticeship programs, and seven professionals who were family or friends of AMS students and who were able to share what it takes to have a career as an engineer, a doctor, a film maker, a financial advisor, an insurance agent, law enforcement officer, and member of the U.S. Air Force. 04/06/2011 - AMS Russian Students Rated Outstanding at Southern Arizona Language Fair

On April 2, 2011, at the Southern Arizona Language Fair hosted at the University of Arizona, two Academy of Math and Science Students received outstanding ratings for their recitation of Russian poetry. Fifth grader Evilina Kadimova and eigthth grader Yana Karapetyan received acclaim for their performances. Ms Kadimova recited, by memory, a poem by Sergei Mikhalkov. She was recognized because of the great depth of expression in her presentation. Ms Karapetyan recited Marina Tsvetayeva's poem "You Are Like Me, Passerby." Her heralded performance was filled with deep emotion and feeling. Congratulations. AMS is proud of all your hard work and accomplishments.

04/04/2011 - AMS Science Olympiad Teams Place at State

The AMS Science Olympiad Team, made up of sixteen middle school students, qualified to compete in twenty out of the twenty-three events at the State Competition, medaled in three of those events, and placed 14th out of the 38 teams who qualified for the State Science Olympiad Competition held Saturday, April 2nd at Glendale Community College outside of Phoenix. 03/26/2011 - Three AMS Students Receive Grand Prize Awards at SARSEF

One elementary and two middle school students recieved Grand Prizes at this year's SARSEF (Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair) held at the Tucson Convention Center. Fifth grader Maria Lipets received a 3rd Place for her Magnetic Linear Accelerator, Anabel Nevarez received 2nd Place for her Diesel vs Biodiesel project, and Nicole Kerrigan received 1st Place for her Voltage as a Function of Electrolyte project. Both Ms Nevarez and Ms Kerrigan received the Broadcom Masters Certificate and have qualified for the national competition for middle school students. 03/25/2011 - Spelling Bee Winners

On March 24th AMS kindergarten through 8th grade students competed in a school wide spelling bee, showing off the skills they have been working on all year long. This competition was modeled after the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and students eagerly awaited their turn to spell the selected words. Each individual class had preliminarily selected their four best spellers who then competed on stage in the cafeteria to determine who was the best speller in their class. 02/23/2011 - Outstanding Science Fair Projects Qualify for SARSEF

Last night at the AMS Science Fair Awards Presentation, students were recognized for all their hard work as well as the high level of achievement with projects ranging from magnetic linear accelerators to blood forensics. Fifteen individual students and Ms Andrist's 2nd grade class qualified for the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF) which will be held March 21st through March 25th at the Tucson Convention Center. 02/22/2011 - 8th Grade Students Set the Curve

Our 8th grade students were honored by being chosen by the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Process) to provide results in a national writing assessment used by the National Center of Education Statistics for the U.S. Department of Education to determine the standard in writing for 8th grade students across the United States. These results are then coordinated with international assessments to compare with the other nations of the world. In essence our 8th graders helped contribute to our "Nation's Report Card."

01/14/2011 - PAC Meeting Update

Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the Parent Action Committee meeting we had our annual Title I School Meeting. Thank you for all who attended. Also, over sixteen gifts were given out to those who had donated their state tax credit contribution to our school. The gifts ranged from a Sony camcorder, spa treatments, gift cards to Fry's, to meals at Eegees, Olive Garden, and Sweet Tomatoes. The next PAC meeting will be February 3, 2011.

December 17, 2010 the Academy of Math and Science celebrated the multitude of cultures which make up our country and our school. The activities included games from many different cultures, we were entertained by student groups who sang winter celebration songs from all over the world, and we were entertained by Turkish folk dancing. 11/19/2010 - Girls’ Volleyball Team Places 2nd

After earning a 5-3 record during the regular season, the AMS Girl's Volleyball Team qualified for the Tucson Independent Athletic League (TIAL) Tournament which was held on November 15th, 16th, and 18th. The girls were paired in the same half bracket as the number one and number two seeded teams. 10/26/2010 - Parent-Teacher Conferences November 3, 2010

Wednesday, November 3, 2010 from 3:15 pm until 6 pm AMS will be holding Parent-Teacher Conferences. Because of this opportunity for parents to meet with their child's teacher, there will be no supervision provided by the school: no after school activities, no Homework Help, no tutoring, and no extended care. All students must be picked up by 3:05 pm or stay with their parents during conferences. Parents of elementary students need to schedule specific conference times with their child's teacher. 10/05/2010 - Tax Credit Raffle:  Make a Tax Credit Donation and Enter to Win Prizes

Any person who makes a tax credit donation to AMS by December 31, 2010 will be entered into our Tax Credit Raffle. Besides donating for a good cause, you can end up taking home some great prizes. On January 14, 2011 in the Academy of Math and Science Auditorium at 5:30pm during the AMS PAC meeting, we will be having the lottery prize drawings for those who made a tax credit donation in 2010. Not only do you get to determine where your tax dollars are being spent and subtract that amount from the Arizona state taxes you owe, you have an opportunity to win a new camcorder, gift certificates to restaurants, gift certificates for department stores, and more. What a great way to start the new year.

You can redirect your state tax dollars--up to $400.00--to the Academy of Math and Science to enrich and improve your child's education. In fact, this can be done by any Arizona resident who pays state income tax. This means that you can invite friends, family members, and co-workers to take advantage of this tax credit and help the students at AMS. The Arizona Tax Credit Law permits this dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual amount that is owed to the state!

Congratulations to Amanda Keen who earned 1st place in the State of Arizona for grade 9, and Brian Lash who earned 1st place in the State of Arizona for grade 10 in the “Math Kangaroo International Math Competition.” AMS also placed first for the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade teams. On Saturday, February 13, 2010, seven of the members of the AMS Science team competed in Science Olympiad. Our students participated in 8 out of 20 events. Our results were fantastic!!! Senior and Parent College Financial Aid Meeting on Wed Feb 10, from 3:00-5:00 in the AMS computer lab. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to get help completing the FAFSA, the online federal financial aid application.

02/05/2010 - PAC Meetings

PAC Meeting dates: March 4, April 8, May 6. Parent Action Committee meetings begin at 5:30 pm with a potluck dinner followed by the meeting for parents and a movie for students. The meetings adjourn at 7:00 pm.

Winter picture day is February, 8. Pictures will only be taken of those students who have prepaid. Students may wear their uniform or dress up for the pictures on that day. No jeans or t-shirts allowed.

AMS is happy to announce the opening of its second state-of-the-art computer lab. All grades from Kindergarten through twelfth grade will utilize this facility.

Elementary school students have almost completed their Winter NWEA session. The results will be posted in February. Nevertheless, you are welcome to request your student results before this date, if you have scheduled parent-teacher conference or if you have some particular concerns about your student progress.

12/18/2009 - International Winter Celebration

The International Winter Celebration was held all day on December 18, 2009. Students and teachers wore different cultural attire, tasted a variety of ethnic food, and participated in international games and workshops. We had a pot luck and students brought in a dish that was a winter tradition for their family. We had a feast! Mrs. Perry and Ms. Ciesielski-Motta thank all our parent's for their help and participation in making this annual event a success. The Academy of Math and Science is an educational community that promotes acceptance of cultural diversity.

- Fall School Picture Day September 3, 2010

Smile! Students and staff will be putting on their best smiles to have their pictures taken Friday, September 3, 2010. The smiles are for our school yearbook, student identification, and for student picture packets which can be purchased. All students will have their picture taken and must be in school uniform. If you are interested in purchasing a package of photos of your child, students are bringing home an information sheet on Friday, August 20, 2010.
