Her favorite subject is math and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Hartley. She enjoys music, likes to sing, and is taking piano at school. One day she wants to be on American Idol. She has three brothers and one sister at home who are older. She has a dog named Rosebud. Students were able to spend time talking to representatives from eight universities and colleges located in Arizona, four trade unions and their apprenticeship programs, and seven professionals who were family or friends of AMS students and who were able to share what it takes to have a career as an engineer, a doctor, a film maker, a financial advisor, an insurance agent, law enforcement officer, and member of the U.S. Air Force. Read moreOn April 2, 2011, at the Southern Arizona Language Fair hosted at the University of Arizona, two Academy of Math and Science Students received outstanding ratings for their recitation of Russian poetry. Fifth grader Evilina Kadimova and eigthth grader Yana Karapetyan received acclaim for their performances. Ms Kadimova recited, by memory, a poem by Sergei Mikhalkov. She was recognized because of the great depth of expression in her presentation. Ms Karapetyan recited Marina Tsvetayeva's poem "You Are Like Me, Passerby." Her heralded performance was filled with deep emotion and feeling. Congratulations. AMS is proud of all your hard work and accomplishments.

This competition was modeled after the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and students eagerly awaited their turn to spell the selected words. Read moreOur 8th grade students were honored by being chosen by the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Process) to provide results in a national writing assessment used by the National Center of Education Statistics for the U.S. Department of Education to determine the standard in writing for 8th grade students across the United States. These results are then coordinated with international assessments to compare with the other nations of the world. In essence our 8th graders helped contribute to our "Nation's Report Card."

Also, over sixteen gifts were given out to those who had donated their state tax credit contribution to our school. The activities included games from many different cultures, we were entertained by student groups who sang winter celebration songs from all over the world, and we were entertained by Turkish folk dancing. Because of this opportunity for parents to meet with their child's teacher, there will be no supervision provided by the school: no after school activities, no Homework Help, no tutoring, and no extended care. All students must be picked up by 3:05 pm or stay with their parents during conferences. Parents of elementary students need to schedule specific conference times with their child's teacher. Students and teachers wore different cultural attire, tasted a variety of ethnic food, and participated in international games and workshops. We had a pot luck and students brought in a dish that was a winter tradition for their family. We had a feast! Mrs. Perry and Ms. Ciesielski-Motta thank all our parent's for their help and participation in making this annual event a success.
