This spring, the Academy of Math and Science participated in the "Math Kangaroo International Mathematics Competition" which included engaging and thought-provoking questions which stemmed from mathematical areas of knowledge including algebra, geometry, and logic. Five million students in over forty countries throughout the world take part in this competition annually. The competition consisted of both individual and team math tests from levels 5th through 12th grades. We are proud to announce several AMS individual and team winners. Individually, Amanda Keen was Arizona State Champion for grade 9, and Brian Lash was Arizona State Champion for grade 10. AMS also took 1st place for the State of Arizona in the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade team competitions. The following students were recognized for their outstanding results for these state championship teams: 7th grade: Alexis Moore, Harley Todd, David Arutyunyants, and Ian Cutlip; 8th grade: Austin Castle, Jordan Bruckmeier, Roberto Lee, and Raymundo Solis;
9th grade: Amanda Keen, Christina Spafford, and Eduardo Garcia.
Math Kangaroo's Mission: By inviting students of any national or ethnic origin to the International Competition in Mathematics: Math Kangaroo we make an effort to:
• Encourage students to master their mathematical knowledge,
• Give them confidence in their ability for comprehending mathematics,
• Help them understand how mathematics applies in nature's laws and human activities,
• Develop their ability to derive pleasure and satisfaction through intellectual life, and
• Show that mathematical education is significant in every part of the world.
Again, congratulations to those students who took first place in the State of Arizona, to all of our students who participated in this competition, and to their math instructors. Great job everyone!
