There is no frigate (ship) like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers (swift horses) like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse (something that crosses over) may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll (having to pay to get across);
How frugal (cheap) is the chariot (in this case a book)
That bears a human soul!
By Emily Dickinson
As a parent, you already know how important reading is to your child's success in school as well as later in his/her adult life; but once summer vacation begins, it seems books most often take a backseat to summer activities and fun. Besides healthy physical activities, please, encourage your child to exercise their brain by reading. Please work together to choose books he/she is likely to enjoy. Research shows that children and adolescents that read over the summer months have a leg-up at the start of the school year; but also a good book can take your child to far-off places, introduce him/her to new friends, and make the summer vacation a "blast." Please take the opportunity to browse the attached summer reading lists to find just the right book to get him/her started on some enjoyable, adventurous, and rewarding summer reading.
